If there’s a theme for December, it might be “maximize.” This is the time to maximize your vacation time, maximize your giving, maximize your holiday celebrations—and maximize your health insurance. That’s because December is your last chance to use your health plan benefits, before your new policy kicks in in January. Here’s a checklist to help you use your plan to the max.
- See your primary care doctor. Did you have a physical this year? Now is a great time to put your health insurance to work and make an appointment. Before you go in, make a list of any questions you might have, including concerns related to your family’s health history, your personal risk factors and any aches and pains you’ve noticed. If you’re planning to start a new diet and exercise routine in the new year, this is a good time to discuss that, too, so you’re ready to launch January 1.
- Make an appointment with your therapist. If your health plan includes mental health coverage, consider making an appointment with a counselor. You can talk with them about your stressors and learn tips and tricks on how to manage them. If you find therapy is helpful, commit to going regularly in 2025.
- Schedule a dental cleaning and exam. If you have dental insurance and you haven’t used the benefits this year, book an appointment so you don’t miss out.
- Visit the eye doctor. How are those peepers doing lately? If you have vision insurance be sure to put it to use. Your eyes may thank you for it!
- Refill your prescriptions. If you’ve been putting off any prescription refills, now’s the time to do it. You want to make sure you have enough medication heading into a new year and new health insurance.
- Get up to date on vaccinations and screenings. Winter is prime-time for spreading the flu and other viruses, such as COVID-19, RSV, whooping cough and pneumonia. If you haven’t gotten vaccinated, do so before the end of the year (especially if you plan to attend any holiday gatherings). In addition, many health plans cover preventative health services, such as cancer screenings. Talk to your primary care doctor and find out if you’re due for any of these.
- Find out if you met your deductible. That’s the term for the amount you pay for eligible health services before your insurance policy begins to share costs. If you have met the deductible, and there are health services or procedures you need, it might be a good idea to schedule them before the start of 2025 when everything will reset.
- Spend the funds in your flexible spending account (FSA). If you have an FSA, it’s time to put that money to use! There are all kinds of qualifying expenses, such as glasses, contacts, bandages, medications, medical equipment, dental expenses and more. The IRS publishes this list, which shares an array of options.
The holidays may not conjure images of doctor’s waiting rooms and colonoscopies. But in truth, it’s often an easy time to get an appointment because many offices may be less busy. So this season, make the most of your health insurance so you can start out the new year with a clear vision for what lies ahead.
