There’s a lot to do before we tie a bow on 2025, and we’re not just talking about baking cookies and wrapping gifts!
For many people, December is the last month to make the most of their current health plan, and it’s also a good time to start strategizing ways to use their new health insurance in 2026.
Not sure where to start? Here are some steps to take to maximize your health plan. Because looking out for your health may be the best gift you can give!
- Make an appointment with your primary care doctor. At many doctors’ offices, December is a quiet time, which can make it easier to schedule an appointment. If you haven’t had a wellness exam this year, get that on the books. Your doctor can check your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol and do a physical. They can also look at your health records and suggest vaccinations and screenings that your plan covers, so that you can try and schedule them by the end of the year.
- Schedule a dental cleaning. If you haven’t seen the dentist yet this year, now is the time. Your dentist and dental hygienist can clean your teeth, examine your mouth and address any issues, so that you’re proud to flash those pearly whites throughout the holidays.
- Get your eyes examined. If you have vision insurance, don’t let it languish. Make an appointment to get your eyes checked, so you have clear vision heading into the new year.
- Refill your prescriptions. December is a great time to stock up on your prescription medications. That way, when things get hectic, you’ll have what you need when you need it without having to worry about running out.
- Spend the funds in your flexible spending account (FSA). Hundreds of health expenses are deductible if you have a health care FSA, including over-the-counter medications and treatments, bandages, chiropractic care, contact lenses and eyeglasses, dental services, first-aid care, medical equipment, hospital fees and more (see the government’s complete list of what’s allowable here). If you’ve set aside that pre-tax money, make sure you use it!
- Set healthy goals for 2026. Now that you’re in the mindset to make the most of your health insurance in 2025, start thinking you can get ahead in 2026. As you familiarize yourself with your new health plan, here are some questions to ask yourself as you devise your strategy for the coming year:
- Does my plan cover my current doctors, or will I need to find new doctors?
- Does my new plan cover my current prescriptions, or will I need to talk to my doctor about potential changes?
- Do I have mental health coverage that I can use? If so, can I find a therapist and book an appointment for January using the new plan?
- Do I have wellness benefits, such as a discounted gym membership, that I can use? Can I establish a workout plan now, so that it’s already a routine in January?
As one year ends and the next begins, we all have an opportunity to make a fresh start. When it comes to your health, that may mean making smart, sustainable choices that will be beneficial in the long run. Your health insurance is a tool that can help you reach your goals and feel good about your choices. But it’s up to you to put it to work!
